TODAY IS THE TOMORROW WE WERE PROMISED YESTERDAY
Left Piece (8ft x 8ft x 1ft)

The contect for this entire piece was at the height of the cold war when the USSR was a world force in opposition to the USA.

The left section (USA), is based losely on the image of the American flag being raised at Iwo Jima.

TODAY IS THE TOMORROW WE WERE PROMISED YESTERDAY
Center Piece (8ft x 8ft x 1ft)

This center section is the inevitable result of such sabre rattling – the sacrifice of the innocent depicted by Philip here in a re-working of Goya’s Third of May Execution, 1808.

TODAY IS THE TOMORROW WE WERE PROMISED YESTERDAY
Right Piece (8ft x 8ft x 1ft)

The right section (USSR), is set against the left section (USA), is based on Stalinist-type paintings of workers.

ONE FOR THE ROAD (16ft x 7ft x 1ft)

Based on the The Last Supper, the religious figures are replaced with various figures from across the the religious divide in the North of Ireland.

JUDGEMENT DAY (10ft x 12ft x 2ft)

In this piece, Christ and the saints are replaced on the celestial stage by a work/class council in judgement, while dismembered bodies rank and file the terrestial zone.

The lower orders are given opportunities through openings in the demarcation lines to aspire socially, to form the higher ranks.

The figures here become more full-bodied in their projected forms than in previous works, and colour now has become more symbolic rather than just aesthetic.

SEE NO GREEN, HEAR NO WHITE, SPEAK NO ORANGE(6ft x 3ft x 1ft)

The message here is a simple and direct comment on political intransigence by using the trinity of senses against the Irish flag’s colours and a repeated death mask with hands covering the appropriate parts.
