Once Upon a Time in Carn
This exhibition have evolved over a period of years. On completion, the series of sculptures will cover periods of ancient history, mythology, symptoms of the economic bubble and its bursting in rural Ireland.
The use within ‘Once Upon at Time in Carndonagh’ of an iconic local reference point as a starting point – the old high cross Donagh Cross in Carndonagh – gives immediate access into the work for audiences as as allowing a critique of how an artificially manufactured ‘Celtic’ past is used as fallback position for regional strength and pride as well as a national USP in an ongoing international marketing ploy.
But for me this encounter of a viewer with the work within a local context will only be a distant starting point – it is only after the work is made, exhibited and seen and discussed that I can really recognise points of inspiration and points of departure.
